Biography

Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Honolulu is one of the representative offices of the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in the US, and as the director- general Mr. Chu is responsible for enhancing Taiwan’s bilateral economic, cultural, education and tourism ties with Hawaii and American Samoa. In addition, his office also provides consular service and serves the interests of overseas compatriots living and visiting in Hawaii.

 Mr. Chu holds a master’s degree in International Business from National Chengchi University, Taipei, Taiwan and has been with the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) for over 30 years. Mr. Chu joined the MOEA’s Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT) in 1976 as a staff member for the Export Administration and was promoted to section chief in charge of Import Administration in 1983.

Mr. Chu has held a series of managerial positions both in Taiwan and overseas. In addition to his current position of director-general of TECO in Honolulu(July2012- ) Mr. Chu has also served as Commercial Secretary at the Coordination Council for North American Affairs, Houston, Texas (1984-1987), as well as the director of the Economic Division at the Taipei Representative Office in Denmark (1987-1992) and in Germany (2004-2006). At the MOEA’s headquarters in Taipei, Mr. Chu, as a department director (1992-1996) at BOFT, was in charge of bilateral trade and trade promotion as well as supervising and coordinating MOEA’s overseas offices. As the Deputy Director General of BOFT (2002-2004), Mr. Chu had experience with international organizations, such as the WTO, APEC, and OECD. Before he was assigned to the position of director-general of TECO in Honolulu, he served as chief of staff to the Vice President (2009 -2012).

Mr. Chu married Hsueh-Hwa (Sherry) in 1981. They have one daughter (Emily) and one son (Franklin).
