Center for Chinese Studies Introduction

             The Center for Chinese Studies or CCS (formerly the Resource and Information Center for Chinese Studies) was established in 1981 to promote research in Chinese studies, both in Taiwan (the Republic of China) and overseas, and to facilitate communication among Chinese studies scholars and institutions worldwide.  The Center is housed in the National Central Library and the Director of the NCL, Dr. Fang-rung Juang, is also Director of the CCS.  The Center is composed of a Materials Division and a Liaison Division, responsible for library services, scholar services, and publications.

      The work of the CCS covers the following areas:  collecting materials related to Chinese studies; providing research and reference services; reporting on academic activities; publishing books and indices; promoting research projects; publishing journals; providing assistance to foreign scholars; and sponsoring academic activities.

 

Chinese Studies Resources

 

      The CCS maintains collections of Ancient Chinese texts, scholarly works on Chinese studies from both local and overseas sources.  We also provide reading rooms and a variety of circulation services and related doctoral dissertations.  Furthermore, we offer a number of special topic databases and are establishing the CCS World Wide Web (http://ccs.ncl.edu.tw) to provide online access to important Chinese studies information from around the world.

 

Grant Program

 

      The CCS offers research stipends and travel subsidies to foreign scholars of Chinese studies at institutions abroad who are interested in carrying out research in Taiwan.  Foreign professors, associate professors, assistant professors, doctoral candidates, as well as researchers at research institutions are eligible for the grant.  Grants are available for periods ranging from three months to one year.  The CCS requires grant recipients to present a research paper at the end of their research tenure and will choose outstanding papers for publication.  The CCS will also, at its discretion, arrange seminars and other cultural activities for visiting scholars.

 

Publications

 

      The CCS published a variety of periodicals, bibliographies and monographs, including:

      *Chinese Studies

A semi-annual collection of papers and book reviews on Chinese literature, history, philosophy.

*Newsletter for Research in Chinese Studies

A quarterly containing articles, interviews, and regular updates on the happenings in the worldwide community of Chinese studies.

 

      In addition to hardcopy versions, the CCS has, since February 2000, been displaying the Chinese Studies and Newsletter for Research in Chinese Studies on our website (http://ccs.ncl.edu.tw).

 

International Conferences

 

      Another important role of the CCS is to promote interaction and exchange between scholars in Taiwan and overseas.  To that end, the Center sponsors a series of international academic conferences and symposia.

      To date, these have included the International Conference on Society, Ethnicity, and Cultural Performance, the International Scholarly Conference on “the Private” and “Sentiment” in Chinese History and Culture, and the International Conference on Sinological Resources in the Digital Era.
