Aussie states recognize ROC driver’s licenses

Several Australian states and territories now recognize Taiwan-issued driver’s licenses held by drivers 25 years of age or older, the ROC Ministry of Foreign Affairs said July 30.

Holders of ROC driver’s licenses who meet the age requirement can apply directly for licenses in the Australian Capital Territory, Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria without having to take written and road tests, according to the ministry.

Western Australia and Queensland are set to implement the measure Aug. 31 and Nov. 30, respectively, followed by New South Wales Feb. 28 of next year.

ROC citizens under the age of 25 with valid licenses will still have to take a driving test when applying to drive in Australia.

The measure was adopted after MOFA and Taiwan’s representative office in the country had lobbied Australian transportation officials for several years, the ministry said. (SB-THN)
