The Nurses and Midwives Council of Belize, in collaboration with the Belize Diabetes Association of New York, held a training conference on July 3, focusing on how to prevent diabetic amputation.
The conference gathered doctors, nurses, and personnel from the Diabetes Association of Belize, Kidney Association of Belize, and the Ministry of Health.
Augustine Elijio, chair of the Council and Deputy Director of Health Services in the Ministry of Health, explained that the conference was necessary, because of the high number of Belizeans being diagnosed with diabetes, and the high incidents of amputation.
The topics of discussion included: wound identification and assessment, filling out a wound assessment form, how to prevent wounds, how to prevent infections, and how to save limbs.
