Sean C. Chen has been confirmed to continue as ROC premier following President Ma Ying-jeou’s second-term inauguration May 20, according to the Presidential Office.

The Cabinet resigned en masse May 10 in accordance with the Constitution, paving the way for a new lineup that will be sworn in along with Ma, said Fan Chiang Tai-chi, spokesman for the Presidential Office.

“President Ma has appointed Chen as premier on the strength of his strong track record in the economy, finance and legal matters, as well as extensive public sector experience,” Fan Chiang said.

“Chen’s achievements in implementing key policy measures since taking office in late January are evident to all,” he said, adding that the president believes Chen is the best candidate to head the Cabinet during his second term.

Prior to being appointed premier, Chen filled a number of government roles such as vice premier, minister of the Financial Supervisory Commission and deputy minister of finance.

According to sources familiar with the matter, there will be a minor Cabinet reshuffle as a handful of officials are expected to return to academia.

Retiring officials include San Gee, deputy minister of the Council for Economic Planning and Development, and Chang Jin-fu, minister without portfolio. (JSM)
