Taiwan Successfully Completed Its 16th Presidential Election

Taiwan has successfully completed its 16th presidential election on January 13th, 2024, marking another milestone in the country’s democratic journey. As of 8:30 AM AST, Lai Ching-te, the candidate of the current ruling party, is leading in the race and set to claim victory, with over 5.5 million votes (40.13%), ahead of Hou Yu-ih (33.44%) and Ko Wen-je (26.43%), according to the Central Election Commission (CEC) . CEC will announce the official vote count later today.
This is the 8th universal and direct presidential election since the first in 1996. The electoral process is peaceful and transparent. Voters cast their ballots to choose their next leader, contributing to the continued flourishing of democracy in Taiwan, whilst the Central Election Commission worked tirelessly to ensure a fair and impartial election.
