Addressing actions at yesterday’s 2017 Summer Universiade opening ceremony, Executive Yuan Spokesperson Hsu Kuo-yong last night expressed severe condemnation and deep dissatisfaction with anti-pension reform groups that blocked athletes from entering the stadium, causing alarm among the visiting delegations and affecting the opening ceremony itself.
This morning Premier Lin Chuan called together Vice Premier Lin Hsi-yao, Interior Minister Yeh Jiunn-rong, and National Police Agency Director-General Chen Kuo-en, as well as the secretary-general and the spokesperson of the Executive Yuan and appropriate aides to a meeting to discuss the issue.
At the meeting, Premier Lin stated that the 2017 Summer Universiade is an international competition and that Taiwan’s hosting of the games is a blessing. The people of the nation should rise above party affiliations and differing viewpoints, and unite in hosting the games and upholding Taiwan’s image. The premier also called for enhanced security and greater deployment of security measures. He said that police must strictly enforce the law, move quickly to make arrests, and forcefully remove any individuals or protest groups in restricted areas threatening the safety of athletes or spectators, or the orderly conduct of the games.
