Founded in 1986, the Taiwan Philharmonic, known at home as the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO), has been hailed as one of the best orchestras in Asia. Made up of some of the finest musical talent from Taiwan and abroad, the NSO enjoys a unique musical voice rich in diversity and tradition.
Led by the concertmaster, an ensemble comprised of the orchestra’s principals and musicians will perform a program of chamber works that feature folk music from Europe and Taiwan. The first half of the concert opens with legendary harpist and composer Franz Poenitz’ Capriccio for clarinet and harp written in 1905. The piece contrasts the harp’s expressive power with an intimate dialog between the two instruments. This is followed by The Dream, a piece for string quartet written in the 1920s by Juozas Naujalis, widely-considered the father of Lithuanian music. The clarinet joins the string quartet for contemporary Taiwanese composer Yuan-Chen Li’s Tao of Meinong, a piece about Taiwan’s Hakka culture featuring its traditional bayin musical motif. The second half begins with the harp and string quartet in Enchanted Forest Whisters by Ching-Mei Lin, a Taiwanese composer who presents a contemporary take on songs from the Taiwan’s mountains. The concert closes with a suite of four folk ballads by Yu-Hsien Teng, often-called the father of Taiwanese folk music. This selection of songs that form part of the enduring legacy of Taiwan’s traditional music culture will leave audiences yearning to pay a visit.
