Taiwan Choir from Kaohsiung will perform in Croatia and present to you the classic folk songs of Taiwan.
Taiwan is a beautiful island rich in diverse cultures. The four major ethnic groups—Hoklo (Minnan), Hakka, Indigenous peoples, and Mainlanders—have coexisted in harmony, weaving a vibrant musical tapestry. The Taiwan Chorus has carefully selected 16 representative songs from each of these cultural traditions. Through music, we hope to share the beauty of Taiwan with our international friends in Croatia and express our deep love and respect for cultural heritage.
Selected Song Highlights
(I) Mandarin Folk Songs
- The Song of Alishan
Alishan is located in the mountainous area of Chiayi, in southern-central Taiwan. It is the traditional homeland of the Tsou people, one of Taiwan's indigenous groups. Alishan is also a popular tourist destination, famous for its breathtaking sunrise views. This song praises the beauty of the Alishan landscape and celebrates the strength and charm of Tsou young men and the grace and affection of Tsou young women.
- Small Town Story
This charming piece paints a picture of the warmth and hospitality found in towns all across Taiwan. The “small town” symbolizes every corner of the island, where simple joys and heartfelt human connections flourish. In the final verse, the song extends a warm invitation to visitors, promising that everyone who comes to Taiwan will be treated like family.
(II) Indigenous Folk Songs
- Malan Girl
Malan Mountain lies in eastern Taiwan, home to the Amis people, one of the island’s largest indigenous groups. This song describes the stunning morning and evening scenes during springtime in the mountain area and praises the beauty of Amis girls, comparing them to blossoming flowers in spring.
(III) Hakka Folk Songs
- Rainy Day (Lu̍k Chúi Thiⁿ)
This is a traditional Hakka folk song that reflects the hardworking and resilient spirit of Hakka women. No matter the weather, they labor tirelessly in the fields and serve their families with strength and patience. The lyrics portray everyday life filled with diligence, sacrifice, and quiet perseverance.
(IV) Taiwanese Hokkien Songs
- Our Homeland – Taiwan
This Taiwanese-language art song depicts Taiwan as a beautiful island, blessed with lush mountains, flowing waters, and evergreen seasons. The lyrics express gratitude to the land for nurturing generations of hardworking and kind people. In the final verse, the homeland is likened to a loving mother, and a heartfelt prayer is offered for Taiwan—to remain forever beautiful, prosperous, and peaceful for generations to come.
- Flame Tree Flowers of My Hometown
The flame tree blooms in Taiwan's summer, with bright red flowers resembling butterflies, radiating the same passion as the summer sun. In Taiwanese literature and music, the flame tree often symbolizes farewell and longing. This song conveys the homesickness of those who live far from home, with their emotions entrusted to memories of the flaming blossoms of summer.
These selected songs represent the diverse voices of Taiwan’s many cultural communities. We warmly welcome our friends in Croatia to enjoy this musical journey through the sounds of Formosa.
