Director General David Cheng-Wei Wu and Mrs. Wu were delighted to attend the flag-raising ceremony in celebration of New Year’s Day. Alongside members of the Taiwanese community, they enjoyed a vibrant traditional lion dance, marking an energetic start to 2025.
In his remarks, DG Wu highlighted crucial cross-partisan motions passed in the NSW Parliament in 2024 that underscored common values shared by Taiwan and Australia, including affirming Taiwan’s democracy, rejecting foreign government interference in Australia politics, and voicing for Taiwan by stating that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 does not assert the PRC’s sovereignty over Taiwan, nor does it determine Taiwan’s future status or restrict Taiwan’s rights in international participation. Moreover, DG Wu reflected events held at NSW Parliament Building in 2024, which showcased the importance of Taiwan’s inclusion in WHO and UNFCCC.
DG Wu emphasized the importance of Australia’s support for a TW-AU FTA and Taiwan’s aspirations to join the CPTPP. As Australia is set to chair the CPTPP Commission in 2025, such collaboration would drive critical supply chain integration, and enhance bilateral and multilateral economic ties.
DG Wu introduced Integrated Diplomacy, featuring President Lai Ching-Te’s Value Diplomacy, as a roadmap to achieve the vision of “A Country Where the Economic Sun Never Sets.” With key pillars of democracy, peace, and prosperity, Taiwan will continue to strengthen its close relationship with Australia and like-minded democracies.
Finally, DG Wu expressed heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support of Taiwanese communities in Sydney and extended warm wishes for a fantastic 2025, the Year of the Snake.
