The Council of the European Union announced today an update of the list of countries for which travel restrictions should be lifted, recommending that EU Member States lift entry restrictions on non-essential travel from Taiwan. This is of great significance and importance for the restoration of the bilateral freedom of travel between Taiwan and the EU and the continued deepening of exchanges between the people of Taiwan and the EU, and demonstrates recognition of Taiwan's longstanding achievements in pandemic prevention.
According to the Council's press release, EU Member States should gradually lift the travel restrictions on legal residents of the listed countries entering the EU and the Schengen associated countries of Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland as of 18 June 2021.
The Council will continue to regularly update and propose to the Member States a list of countries for which the restrictions on entry should be lifted. The Member States still have the right to decide whether to open their borders to third country nationals according to the Council's recommended list, and it is also up to the government of each Member State to decide whether to require quarantines or negative test reports from arrivals upon entry.
