The Lithuanian monthly IQ The Economist published an in-depth analysis of the increasingly close cooperation between Taiwan, the EU and Lithuania, February 21, which included interviews with Ambassador Tsai Ming-yen, EU officials, experts and academics.
In the piece, Ambassador Tsai said that the European Parliament passed 13 resolutions related to Taiwan last year and sent an official delegation to Taiwan for the first time. Taiwan and the EU have a close partnership he stated, before adding that expressing the hope that the two sides will negotiate and sign a bilateral investment agreement as soon as possible, so that Taiwan can become an important partner for the EU in key industries such as ICT and semiconductors.
According to Zsuzsa Anna Ferenczy, a researcher at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the Taiwan-EU relationship has generated unprecedented interest and support within the EU, which sees Taiwan as a reliable partner in its Indo-Pacific strategy, a significant change from the previous view of relations with Taiwan based solely on the EU-China relationship.
In his remarks, MEP Charlie Weimers stressed the urgent need for the EU to work on bilateral investment agreements with Taiwan, to continue to strengthen cooperation in areas such as public health, science, culture, information and communication technologies, and to hold official meetings and visits at a higher level.
