After two years’ hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Taiwanese community in Belgium reassembled at the Ecole Sun Yat-Sen de Belgique (overseas Taiwanese school) to hold the "Celebration of the 112th Year of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Flag-Raising Ceremony" on the morning of January 1st. Ambassador & Mrs. Remus Li-Kuo CHEN together with the staff members and their families attended the event. A total of more than 100 participants honored this special occasion with the demonstration of Taiwanese spirit in perseverance, resilience, unity and diligence!
During the speech, Ambassador CHEN expressed his sincere appreciation to Council Member LAI Shan-Lin of the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC), and Chairman LIU Miao-Erh of the Ecole Sun Yat-sen de Belgique, as well as all the Taiwanese Community members in Belgium who collaborated and contributed in the preparation and success of today’s ceremony with their dedication and hard work.
Ambassador Remus CHEN also emphasized that while still facing the daunting challenges of geopolitical changes, energy crisis, post-pandemic economic recovery and inflation, we shall keep on making relentless efforts and uniting as one, so that Belgium, Europe and the whole world will pay closer attention to and extend their strong solidarity with Taiwan by recognizing Taiwan’s strategic position and value in defending democracies, as a hub with geopolitical and military implications, and the gravity center of key supply chains! Ambassador CHEN concluded his remarks by encouraging the Belgian Taiwanese Community to help achieve one of the goals of Taiwan's post-pandemic economic recovery, that is, to bring their families or suggest more friends from all walks of life in Belgium to visit Taiwan, so that they will learn through their own eyes the true stories about Taiwan, the beauty of its people and the landscape! Hopefully at least 6 million international tourists will visit Taiwan in the year 2023!
After the ceremony, Ambassador & Mrs. CHEN continued to have lunch with leaders of the Taiwanese Community. In addition to wishing each other a happy, healthy and safe new year, the conversation also touched upon topics ranging from the prospects for overseas community affairs to key educational agenda in Belgium in the coming year. It is our humble wish that any suggestions or encouragement to help this office better serve our local Taiwanese community will be deeply appreciated. With the joint efforts of everyone from home and abroad, Taiwan will continue to move forward to a brighter future with bravery and confidence.
