The Formosa Club in Europe, in coordination with the European Parliament and a total of 869 legislators from 27 European countries and Canada, jointly sent a letter to the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in support of Taiwan's participation as an observer in the World Health Assembly (WHA) scheduled for 27 May to 1 June 2024.
The co-chairs of the Formosa Club and the cross-border legislators emphasise that Taiwan's outstanding medical expertise and resources make it an essential partner in promoting global health. They urge the WHO to uphold professionalism and neutrality by adopting open and flexible approaches to ensure Taiwan's participation in shaping global health policies. The parliamentarians further call on the WHO to accept Taiwan as an observer in the WHA, as well as in various meetings, activities, and mechanisms of the WHO, including the International Health Regulations and the Pandemic Agreement.
We express our gratitude to the Formosa Club in Europe, as well as the legislators from the European Parliament and national parliaments in Europe and Canada, for their support of Taiwan's participation in the WHO. As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will continue to dedicate efforts to safeguard global health security. We also hope that the WHO will heed the international support for Taiwan and truly embody the spirit of 'leaving no one behind'.
