We extend our appreciation to the European Parliament for including strong commitment supporting Taiwan in the resolutions on the implementation of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) - 2024 annual report and the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) - 2024 annual report on the 2nd of April.
Both reports reaffirm the European Parliament’s continued attention to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and call for stronger EU-Taiwan cooperation. The resolutions highlight concerns regarding tensions in the region and underscore the European Union’s interest in maintaining a rules-based international order.
In the two resolutions, the European Parliament:
- Denounces China’s continuous military provocations and disinformation campaigns targeting Taiwan, stressing the need for increased EU vigilance against hybrid threats and any unilateral actions that could alter the status quo.
- Recognises Taiwan’s contribution to global supply chains, particularly in high-tech sectors, and encourages advancing discussions on an investment agreement with Taiwan.
- Reaffirms support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in multilateral organisations such as the WHO, ICAO, and UNFCCC, and condemns China’s efforts to block such participation by misinterpreting or distorting UN resolution 2758.
- Underlines the broader EU commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability—not only in Europe but globally—by working closely with like-minded partners in the Indo-Pacific region such as Taiwan.
- Recognises Taiwan’s strategic role in cybersecurity and emerging technologies, urging deeper cooperation to strengthen the EU’s resilience against cyber threats and disinformation campaigns.
- Recommends that Taiwan be granted access to the IRIS2 Satellite Constellation.
At a time of increasing geopolitical tensions, these resolutions send a clear and resolute message that Taiwan is a key partner of the European Union in upholding democratic values, regional security, and a rules-based international order. The Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium remains committed to deepening Taiwan-EU relations and will continue working to expand our partnership in areas of mutual interest.
