We are saddened to hear of the passing of ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen on 29 April and would like to express our deepest condolences for the loss.
President van Baalen was a true friend of Taiwan and a fighter for freedom and democracy. Through the course of his distinguished career, he was a Member of the Dutch House of Representatives, Member of the European Parliament and Vice-Chair of the EP-Taiwan Friendship Group. He was also the Honorary Chair of Liberal International.
President van Baalen spared no efforts in promoting and deepening the relationships between Taiwan and the EU as well as the Netherlands. Being an active advocate for Taiwan in the international arena, President van Baalen was regarded not only as a firm friend of Taiwan, but also a respectable opinion leader in Europe.
We will always admire President van Baalen’s efforts to promote freedom and democracy. His friendship with Taiwan will be appreciated and remembered wholeheartedly.
