The European Parliament adopted the “Resolution on Chinese countersanctions on EU entities and MEPs and MPs” with an overwhelming majority (599 in favor, 30 against, 58 abstain) on 20 May 2021. In this resolution, the Parliament strongly condemned the baseless sanctions imposed by China, and specified its position to frozen the ratification of EU-China CAI deal. This resolution also mentioned that the trade and investment agreements with Taiwan should not be held hostage to the suspension of the CAI ratification.
The support from the European Parliament for an EU-Taiwan investment agreement is deeply appreciated. Furthermore, we would like to emphasize that the preparatory procedure including impact assessment, public consultation and scoping exercise should start as soon as possible!
