Starting from August 1, 2016, Brunei citizens can travel, conduct business, visit relatives or attend international conferences, sports events, trade fairs in Taiwan under a visa waiver program, with a maximum duration of 30 days stay. However, this arrangement doesn't yet apply to Bruneian permanent residents.
As one of the initiatives of "Going South" policy, the Government of the Republic of China(Taiwan)decides to unilaterally allow Brunei's and Thailand's citizens travel to Taiwan without having to obtain a visa, in order to increase trade with ASEAN Countries and boost the number of ASEAN tourists. The arrangement is tentatively scheduled for 1 year, starting on August 1, 2016 to July 31, 2017.
Besides Brunei and Thailand, the other ASEAN countries under Taiwan's visa waver program are Malaysia and Singapore, which already have implemented mutual visa exemption arrangements with Taiwan.
When Brunei citizens travel to Taiwan, they are advised to possess an ordinary, official or diplomatic passport with remaining validity period more than 6 months upon arrival. Passengers holding emergency, temporary and other informal passports or travel documents are not in this category.
Brunei citizens who intend to travel to Taiwan for other than the above-mentioned purposes-such as employment, study, residence with family or attend courses, or wish to stay in Taiwan longer than 30 days, are advised to apply for an appropriate visa at this Office.(E)
