Dec. 4th 2018, BELIZE CITY, BELIZE—
The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) is pleased to announce that an Achievement Ceremony was successfully held at the San Ignacio Town Hall for the Flood Warning Capacity Building and Green Energy Project last Friday, Nov. 30th, 2018.
The first project aims to help the Belize government improve the country's flood warning capacity and introduce the geographic information system (GIS) to strengthen its disaster prevention and alleviation ability, so as to protect people's lives and property with focus in the towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena. In addition, this project is assisting in the production of digital elevation models (DEM) as well as flood potential maps based on the disaster records and the existing geographic information. The project also addresses relevant education training and publicity activities.
Since the above-mentioned project is an important step in building community resilience to combat climate change, Taiwan also works with the long-term partner, Pan American Development Foundation (PADF), to implement the joint project for strengthening community and ecosystem resilience and sustainability. Through bilateral and multilateral approaches and efforts, the community capacity to function in the face of external disasters will be enhanced.
To further support Belize’s endeavors on the reduction of Greenhouse Gas emission and better use of efficient and renewable energy, the Government of Taiwan has the great honor to join the Ministry for the project of “Enhancing Sustainable Development in Western Belize through the Development of Carbon Neutral Energy Efficient Public Spaces and Sporting Facilities”. Taiwan’s contribution at BZD$60,000 will be used for replacing the lighting system in Victor Galvez Stadium and establishing four photo voltaic powered re-chargeable work stations across the facilities, providing an area for youth to carry out school related work and the residents a meeting place.
With the ultimate goal through three mutual cooperation in the enhancement of flood warning capacity and use of renewable energy, Taiwan will continue to work closely with Belize by sharing experiences and providing needed support.
Ends.
