The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Belize, together with the Belize Taiwan Alumni Society (BTAS), hosted the Orientation Ceremony for the 2025 Taiwan MOFA & ICDF Scholarship recipients on August 10 at the Belize Biltmore Plaza.
H.E. Ambassador Lily Li-Wen Hsu congratulated this year’s 64 exceptional Belizean students (34 under MOFA Taiwan Scholarship and 30 under TaiwanICDF Scholarship), who are preparing to embark on an exciting and transformative journey to pursue higher education in Taiwan. Their chosen fields of study include digital media, sustainable energy, tropical agriculture, business administration, human resource management, public health, ICT, AI, education, tourism, and international relations. All of these areas are vital to Belize’s future growth and national development.
The event was honored by the presence of Hon. Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, Culture, and Immigration; Hon. Oscar Requena, Minister of Education, Science and Technology; Hon. Orlando Habet, Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management; and distinguished alumni H.E. Katherine Meighan, Ambassador-Designate of Belize to Taiwan, and Dr. Kenrick Williams, Deputy Permanent Representative of Belize to the UN.
More than a dozen accomplished alumni who are playing critical roles in various fields in Belize were also present to share their insights and experiences with the new scholarship awardees, encouraging them to contribute to the development of Belize after graduation.
Our bilateral youth exchange goes beyond the scholarship programs. Among the participants was Ms. Alyssa Fisher, recipient of the Chou Ta-Kuan Foundation “Global Love of Lives” Medal, whose remarkable journey of resilience and advocacy for the visually impaired will soon take her to Taiwan in September to be honored alongside other inspiring champions of life from 11 countries. Also present were two Belizean youth representatives of the “Taiwan Global Pathfinder Initiative,” who will soon undertake internships in sustainable tourism and smart agriculture in Taiwan, as well as five Taiwanese students currently studying at the University of Belize.
The event stood as a true testament to the strong and enduring Taiwan-Belize friendship and partnership, and it also highlighted the ever growing youth exchange between our two countries!
