The Chinese Taipei Taekwondo Team won four gold, two bronze medals and awards for best male team and female team recently at the 2016 Canada Open & Para Open in Montreal, making it the biggest winner in the taekwondo competition.
Lin Wan-ting and Wu Shao-yu captured gold in the 46-kilogram and 49-kilogram senior women’s events respectively, while Liu Wei-ting and Huang Yu-jen each secured gold in the 80-kilogram and 68-kilogram senior men’s events.
Yeh Li-hsuan and Li Yueh-lin respectively finished with a bronze medal in the 62-kilogram senior women’s event and 87-kilogram senior men’s event.
In addition, Wang Chun-chieh was awarded as the Best Coach for Female Athletes, Lin Wan-ting as the Best Female Athlete and Chang Han-wen as the Best Referee.
The 2016 Canada Open & Para Open ran from Feb. 12 to 14 at the Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard in Montreal. The 14-member Chinese Taipei delegation, led by Head Coach Lee Chia-jung, were met by the Taiwanese Canadian Association of Grand Montreal President Chiayi Chen, the Taiwanese Trade & Commerce Association of Montreal/Ottawa President Min-jen Pan and the Taiwanese Young Professional Association of Quebec President Chia Sheng Chao at the Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport on Feb. 8. Overseas Taiwanese communities provided the team with assistance in transportation and Taiwanese cuisine.
TECO Representative Wu Rong-chuan, who hosted the team’s celebration party, thanked the athletes for showcasing Taiwan on the international stage, while Head Coach Lee expressed satisfaction over the team’s outstanding performance and showed deep appreciation for the warm reception and kind assistance provided by TECO staff and local overseas Taiwanese.
Taiwan was forced to withdraw from the 1976 Montreal Olympics due to political pressure. The taekwondo team’s return to Montreal with such brilliant records is of great significance.
