Mr. Andy Kang-I Chen, Director General of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vancouver and Mrs. Chen hosted the 107th National Day Reception on October 5, 2018.
More than six hundred guests attended the reception, including officials from the Canadian federal, provincial and municipal governments, as well as leaders of the Taiwanese community groups.
In his remarks, Mr. Chen emphasized that the people of Taiwan cherish the hard-won democracy and freedom. The government will continue to safeguard Taiwan’s core values of democracy, freedom and human rights, and turn democratic concepts and achievements into solid pillars of the society.
Mr. Chen said Trade between Taiwan and Canada is highly complementary. Both countries will both be benefited once Taiwan becomes a full member of Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Mr. Chen hopes Canada will lend full support to Taiwan’s bid to join the CPTPP. In addition, a foreign investment promotion and protection agreement (FIPA) between Taiwan and Canada would provide a more open, transparent and indifferent investment environment for both sides, thus further promoting mutual economic benefits.
Mr. Chen also pointed out that the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) will continue to promote Taiwan’s inclusion into the United Nations, because the 23 million people of Taiwan should enjoy rights equal to those of other world citizens.
