One of Taiwan's most significant and representative post-war overseas writers, Dr. Wu Jing-Yu, also known by his pen name Chen Lei, recently passed away. His family and children hosted a "Celebrating the Life of Dr. Wu" event on July 20 at Henry's on James in Hamilton.
Director General Lawrence Liang from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto (TECO) and Director Paul Lan of TECO’s Cultural Centre both attended the event and acknowledged Dr. Wu's lifelong dedication to promoting Taiwanese language and literature.
Dr. Wu Jing-Yu was originally from Madou, Tainan. He graduated from Tainan First Senior High School and the Department of Medicine at National Taiwan University. Later, he completed postdoctoral studies at the University of Toronto and settled in Toronto to practice medicine. In addition to his medical career, he also engaged in literary creation. Since 1982, he began writing literary works in Taiwanese. His works include novels, essays, and modern poetry, with approximately 400 pieces written throughout his life. He can truly be called the "King of Taiwanese Language Literature."
