Taiwanese Author Terao Tetsuya and Translator Lin King to be Featured at Toronto International Festival of Authors 2025

With the support of the Taipei Cultural Center in New York, Taiwanese author Terao Tetsuya (寺尾哲也) and translator Lin King will participate in the 2025 Toronto International Festival of Authors (TIFA) on November 1st. This marks the seventh occasion that Taiwanese authors and translators have been featured at this prestigious event.

The Toronto International Festival of Authors, Canada’s largest and longest-running literary festival, has been a key event for contemporary authors since 1974. This year, it is leaving its longtime home at the Harbourfront Centre to become a financially independent organization, aiming to engage more deeply with the city. The festival will adopt a new five-day format from October 29th to November 2nd and will feature 100 events, including conversations, masterclasses, talks, and readings, with authors from more than 10 countries, held at new venues in partnership with Victoria University at the University of Toronto.

Lin King is the translator of Taiwan Travelogue by Taiwanese author Yang Shuang-zi. Published by Graywolf Press in November 2024, Taiwan Travelogue has received widespread acclaim, winning the National Book Award for Translated Literature and the Asia Society’s Baifang Schell Book Prize. Lin King has also recently been shortlisted for both the National Translation Award in prose and the First Translation Prize by the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA).

Terao Tetsuya’s Spent Bullets, set in Taiwan and Silicon Valley, is a collection of linked stories that explore the meaning of success and the purpose of existence . The book follows the short life and long shadow of an engineering genius who descends deeper into despair while rising higher on the professional ladder. Winner of the Taiwan Literature Awards’ Golden Book Award and the New Bud Award, the English edition, translated by Kevin Wang, will be published by HarperVia on October 14th, 2025.

At TIFA 2025, Lin King will take part in two sessions on November 1st. In the first, she joins translators Jeremy Tiang and Ryad Assani-Razaki to share insights into the art and challenges of translation. In the second, she meets with Korean Canadian writer Jinwoo Park to examine themes of identity, memory, and history. Meanwhile, Terao Tetsuya will speak with author Sheung-King to discuss how stories cross borders and convey shared human experiences.

During this visit to Canada, Lin King has been invited by the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library at the University of Toronto to deliver a book talk on Taiwan Travelogue at the OCAC in Toronto on November 2nd. Tetsuya Terao will join her for a literary talk at the University of Toronto’s Department of Linguistics on November 3rd, sharing insights on Taiwanese fiction and translation with students and local readers.
