A Taiwanese driver’s license is now valid throughout Canada. That’s after an agreement for mutual recognition of driver’s licenses with Newfoundland and Labrador took effect on Tuesday, April 17. A similar agreement was already in place with Canada’s eight other provinces.
The deal allows licensed drivers from Taiwan and the Canadian provinces to drive in each other's territory without having to take road or written tests. That’s the word from Remus Chen, director-general of the foreign ministry department in charge of North American affairs.
Chen said Taiwan has been pushing to sign such deals with all 10 of Canada's provinces since 2008. As of December 2017, more than 4,800 Taiwanese nationals have made use of the arrangement.
To date, Taiwan has signed similar agreements with a total of 103 countries and territories.
