Cooperate to Explore New Blue Ocean GLORIA Joins Forces with Enterprises in NTD 130 Million Cooperation Agreement

Launched by Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the Global Research & Industry Alliance (GLORIA) gathers 18 alliances in the GLORIA Pavilion at COMPUTEX, which opens from May 28 to June 1, to jointly exhibit top technologies and services developed by each alliance. Today (29), Minister Chen Liang-gee of Science and Technology, representatives of the 18 alliances, and domestic and foreign industries, jointly attend the Industry-Academia Future Vision signing ceremony and press conference, signing a cooperation agreement worth NTD 130 million. Also, “GLORIA Innovative Application International Forum” will be held at the main stage area of InnoVEX, where participants get together to discuss and explore the trends and applications of intelligent machinery and biotechnology.

At the signing ceremony, 6 major enterprises from different disciplines will sign with the schools a long-term cooperation agreement, generating a total of NTD 130 million in collaborative R&D or technical transfers; the agreements are entered into by National Taipei University of Technology, Casetek Holdings, and Walsin; National Taiwan University of Science and Technology and Aaeon; Taipei Medical University and Welbloom; and Feng Chia University and Gain-How Printing, declaring GLORIA’s objective to thrive and grow with enterprises, and jointly face the challenges of the rapidly changing market trends. GLORIA has also successfully facilitated cooperation between leading international companies and local Taiwanese academic institutions. Qualcomm has also confirmed that it will launch industry-academia cooperation with four universities: National Taiwan University, National Cheng Kung University, National Tsing Hua University, and National Chiao Tung University. Qualcomm is expected to expand investments in Taiwan in the areas of 5G technology and OEM related industries, and join forces with the four universities for R&D and talent incubation.

GLORIA Innovative Application Forum will feature National Cheng Kung University, National Central University, National Taiwan University, and National Chiao Tung University, which will target intelligent machinery and biotech and present four themes: “Intelligent Manufacturing and Industry 4.1,” “Trends, Research and Case Studies of Intelligent Manufacturing,” “Innovative Biotech is Changing Our Health,” and “Smart Healthcare.” Chair Professor, Cheng Fan-tien of NCKU will share application of virtual metrology; Associate Professor Cheng Yung-pin and Professor Chen Ching-han will present on the possibility of carrying out assembly line integration across platforms through automatic inspection system and AI visual recognition technology. College of Medicine, NTU, has long focused on biotechnology; headed by Professor Yang Pan-Chyr, the project congregates the experiences of Professor Chen Chien-yu, Professor Lai Fei-pei, and Professor Hu Wu-liang to propose how integration of medical data and AI can be carried out. Professor Sau-Hsuan Wu of NCTU will share personal observations on precise personal medical judgement and preventive system. The forum is participated by attending physicians of Department of Internal Medicine, National Taiwan University Hospital Attending Physician Dr. Bor-Sheng Ko, Far East Machinery , and AllBio Science Gene Song, offering startups and VCs in attendance industrial trend observations and new investment targets.

Minister Chen Liang-gee of Science and Technology points out that, every aspect of the 5+2 Industry Innovation Plan requires close cooperation between the industries and academia. With objectives of “Continued promotion of fundamental research,” “generation of local value,” and “development of technological innovations,” domestic and overseas enterprises have been engaged in real collaborations with schools matched through the alliances, helping the enterprises to rediscover the industrial application scenarios of Taiwan’s academic research. In the future, MOST’s GLORIA will continue to focus on forward-looking competitive areas to create innovative ecosystem for Taiwan’s local industry and academia.

Launched in 2017, MOST plans to invest NTD 2.4 billion in a span of four years to promote GLORIA. Currently, 18 alliances have been established, actively helping domestic universities to focus on visionary research areas, assist the academia to meet domestic and overseas industrial needs, and enhance overall competitiveness through collective strength, driving industrial innovations. By the end of March 2019, GLORIA has accumulated 339 local and international members, facilitated industry-academia collaborations and technical transfers reaching NTD 1000 million, and incubated 3300 professional talents. In addition to being an important platform that integrates university resources for industry-academia collaboration and promotes research outcomes, GLORIA is also actively assuming the role of incubator of startups, giving rise to 48 startups that cooperate with local academic institutions or enterprises in U.S., Vietnam, and Malaysia, for international industry-academia cooperation; these are the very manifestations of Taiwan’s strategy of pragmatic diplomacy and international networking.
