Representative of Taipei Trade Office Jessica Lee joined the faculty and students of the Yat Sen Primary School in celebrating the Chinese New Year of Ox on 11 February 2021.
In her remarks, Representative Lee said that according to the Chinese Zodiac, Ox is characteristic of loyalty, diligence and persistence. She encouraged students to learn from the characteristics of Ox and work hard at school. She went on to tell Chinese fables about Ox and the Chinese Valentine Day. Before closing her remarks, she asked students questions regarding the Chinese fables and gave gifts to those who could answer correctly. After the remarks, Representative presented prizes to students who won the Best Dress Award.
The event started with Chinese lion dance performed by the senior students, which was greeted with thunderous applause from the audience. Students continued to perform junior lion dance, Taiko drum, Fijian, Chinese, Indian traditional dances, featuring the harmonious multiple cultures of Fiji.
The Yat Sen School, formerly known as Suva Chinese School, was founded in 1936, and then renamed as Yat Sen School. In 1986, it was expanded to offer junior high school education and then the preschool education. The school offers Chinese language programs and adopts the Traditional Chinese character, Now it has around 12,000 students and about 400 of them are of Chinese descent. For many years the Overseas Community Affairs Council of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has dispatched overseas cultural teachers to Yat Sen Primary School to teach traditional Chinese dances, which the student always perform at the Chinese Lunar New Year, the Teachers’ Day and the Graduation Ceremony.
