People in rural Areas and outer islands will soon receive handy solar products donated by Government of Taiwan. Solar reading lamps, solar LED radios, solar mosquito traps, and solar panel 10W kits valued at US$150,000 altogether were handed over to the Government of Fiji on 22 April 2021.
The solar products are handy and easy to be distributed to people living in remote areas. People can turn on the lights, listen to radios, eliminate mosquitos, children can read at night without having to worry about the electricity bill, thanks to the technology of renewable energy. Now that the economy has been badly hit by the pandemic and some houses were destroyed by TC Yasa and Ana , those handy solar products can help people save money on the electricity bill and make their lives easier.
Taiwan Government initiated the clean energy programs in the Pacific island countries. In 2018 this first donation of solar products, solar power off-grid systems valued at US$400,000 were installed at Valeiyaganiga Village in Cakaudrove, Namukaicake District School in Macuata and Wainikeli District School in Taveuni. The schools enjoyed free electricity generated by the solar power systems. The villagers could turn on lights, running small business like canteen or grocery stores at their houses after the solar power systems were installed. It was really a life changing for the villagers.
Solar power is a good source of environmentally sound, reliable and sustainable energy which can reduce not only air pollution, but also the electrical bills. The government is promoting solar-based rural electrification in outer islands. The provision of the solar products by Taiwan is in line with Fiji Government’s energy policy.
1,500 solar reading lamps, 1,500 solar Led radios, 100 solar mosquito traps and 70 sets of 10W solar kits have been donated by Taiwan.
The donation is valued at US$150,000.
