Representative of the Taipei Representative Office in Greece Sherman S. Kuo received a group of high school students and their teachers from Taipei on July 9
Starting traveling in early June this year, their whole trip will take about 45 days for the outside-of-the-classroom learning. The group had visited Turkey and Northern and Central Greece before arriving in Athens and will continue their journey to several major Greek islands. They planned to visit local schools, museums, archaeological sites, geological parks etc., to study Greek history, archeology, arts, and interact with and interview local residents.
The students showed great interest in Taiwan-Greece relations and Greek history, social situation, and the recent parliamentary election. They raised questions enthusiastically, while Ambassador Kuo replied in great details. The Office also arranged Mrs. Jenny Wu, a veteran member from the Taiwanese community in Greece and who has lived in Greece for more than 20 years, to give an overall introduction of Greece and talk about her personal experience living and working in Greece.
The students also introduced the concept of "action learning" and shared their observations and findings of their journey so far. Lin Dian said: "After confirming the countries and regions where we will go, we will investigate the countries and their cultures and current situations and formulate the themes of learning. The itineraries are arranged based on the chosen themes.”
The common feeling of the students is that they don’t have to go to school, but they learn more when they leave home and leave the classroom. Pan jun-wei said: “The destination country is our classroom; the local people are our teachers; we learn through engagement and exchange!"
