Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu to visit St. Kitts and Nevis to Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Independence of the Federation and 40 Years of Diplomatic Relations between Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis

The Republic of China (Taiwan) extends warm congratulations to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, on the occasion of its 40th anniversary of independence. To demonstrate the enduring friendship and to further strengthen the bilateral cooperation, President Tsai Ing-wen has appointed Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu as Special Envoy to visit St. Kitts and Nevis from September 18 to 20, during the celebration of Independence Day.

This year also marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis. During his visit, Minister Wu will participate in a series of events commemorating St. Kitts and Nevis’ independence, including the signing ceremony of “Agreement on Diplomatic Staff Training Cooperation”, and to meet with H.E. Governor-General Marcella Liburd, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, Foreign Minister Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas, and Premier Hon. Mark Brantley, to discuss various aspects of the bilateral cooperation.

Since establishing diplomatic ties in 1983, the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis have maintained a strong friendship and partnership. The government of St. Kitts and Nevis has shown unwavering support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. On April 4, 2023, the St. Kitts and Nevis National Assembly passed a unanimous resolution in support of Taiwan’s participation in the United Nations (UN), the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), reaffirming St. Kitts and Nevis’ bipartisan support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. Furthermore, the two countries share a longstanding history of close cooperation in different fields, including public health, education, information and communication technology, women’s empowerment, climate resilience, and sustainable development, which has benefited the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
