Taiwan Navy’s "Friendship Flotilla" Concludes Landmark Visit to Saint Kitts and Nevis after 23-Year Hiatus

The Republic of China (Taiwan) Navy’s 2026 Midshipmen Cruising and Training Squadron (MCTS) successfully concluded a three-day goodwill visit to the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis from April 9 to 11. The visit, marking the fleet's first return to the Federation in 23 years, was characterized by high-level official engagements, cultural exchanges, and overwhelming public support.

Official Welcome and State Reception

The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis held a formal welcoming ceremony at Port Zante on the morning of April 10 to receive the visiting squadron. Commanded by Rear Admiral Chen Ming-feng, the three-ship squadron was greeted by a high-level delegation led by Her Excellency Governor-General Dame Marcella Liburd and the Honourable Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, alongside Deputy Governor-General Her Honour Hyleeta Liburd and the Premier of Nevis, the Honourable Mark Brantley and other senior officials

In his address, Prime Minister Drew remarked that the visit underscores the profound and enduring diplomatic bond between the two nations. He emphasized that "true partnership is rooted in the interaction between our peoples" and encouraged the visiting sailors to immerse themselves in the Federation’s rich cultural heritage.

Following the ceremony, Governor-General Liburd was escorted aboard the flagship Panshi to tour the "MCTS Exhibition," showcasing Taiwan’s technological and cultural advancements.

At noon on the 10th, Prime Minister Drew and Lady Drew hosted a formal luncheon for the High Command of the Taiwan Navy squadron. Later that evening, the Squadron hosted a grand reception aboard the flagship Panshi. Governor-General Liburd led a delegation of senior government officials in attendance, joining the officers and sailors for an evening of camaraderie and authentic Taiwanese cuisine. To honour the visiting naval personnel, the Kittitian hosts also organized a traditional 'Masquerade Dance' performance, celebrating the arrival of their guests from afar.

The squadron’s visit drew significant public interest, with approximately 1,500 citizens boarding the vessels for public tours. In the heart of the capital, a massive street performance on Bay Road featured a joint display by the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force Band and Taiwan’s elite military units. The ROC Naval Academy Drum and Bugle Corps, the Marine Corps Honour Guard, and the Chikwondo Team earned standing ovations for their precision drills and martial arts displays.

The spirit of camaraderie extended to the athletic field and the community:

  • Sporting Diplomacy: A friendly basketball match was held between the Taiwan Navy crew and the SKN Defence Force.
  • Commemorative Art: A friendship mural was unveiled on the exterior wall of Warner Park Sporting Complex, blending the imagery of cricket and basketball to symbolize the fusion of the two cultures.

Fostering Regional Peace

The Taiwan Navy 2026 Midshipmen Cruising and Training Squadron mission serves as a testament to Taiwan’s commitment to consolidating its diplomatic alliances and expanding its international presence. This visit further solidifies the partnership between Taiwan and Saint Kitts and Nevis as they continue to collaborate on regional peace, security, and sustainable development.
