An experimental project--Enhancing Livelihood through Smart Agriculture-- was kicked off at the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) in Laura by the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), TTM in conjunction with Ministry of Natural Resources and Commerce (NRC) on January 19, with an eye to improving the production of vegetable and other crops in Marshall Islands.
The project is not only crucial to agricultural development, but also related to health and economic development. Sufficient and steady supply of produce at reasonable prices will lead to more and regular consumption of vegetable, which will be conducive to the prevention of non-communicable diseases.
In his remarks, Dr. Szu-chien HSU, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan, said that as the project would be considered a new stage of the agricultural cooperation between the two countries, he encourages the staff of TTM to keep up the good work and continue to team up with Ministry of NRC and other stakeholders in making the project a success. Honorable Sandy Alfred, Minister of NRC, expressed his deep appreciation to Taiwan for assisting RMI in the development of agriculture over the years, and hoped that the project will create new opportunities for agriculture to benefit both the farmers and consumers in the future.
Dr. HSU attended the event during his visit as the Special Envoy of Taiwan for the Inauguration Ceremonies of H.E. President David Kabua. Other attendees included Taiwan Ambassador H.E. Jeffery Hsiao, US Ambassador H.E. Karen Stewart, H.E. Neijon Edwared, MRI Ambassador to Taiwan, Honorable Jiba Kabua, Minister of Works, Infrastructure and Utilities, Honorable Kitlang Kabua, Minister of Education, Honorable Senator Dennis Momotaro, Honorable Senator Stephen Phillip, etc. They went on a tour in TTM's farm after the ceremony.
