Two representatives from ROC Taiwan’s International Cooperation Development Fund (ICDF)were in Majuro last week to do the post evaluation of the Jitok Kapeel vocational training program I, II & III on electrical, plumbing and automotive. Taiwan ICDF through ROC Taiwan Embassy in Majuro provided $800,000 including trainers, training materials and equipments for the Jitok Kapeel for the past 2 years. While Mr. Thomas Wang and Mr. Morris Mai of ICDF were in Majuro, they interviewed Jitok Kapeel graduates for the past 3 cycles and their employers, and discussed launching and prospect of cycle 4 starting in 2014 with National Training Council, College of the Marshall Islands, and the Ministry of the Public Works.
According to Assit. Secretary Imang Chong Gum of MIPW, one graduate of the Jitok Kapeel later attended Job Corps in the United States and was immediately put into the advanced level because he the skill he already acquired in the Marshall Islands. This Marshallese guy later worked as an electrician and received $20 per hour pay and now serves as a manager of a solar power company in Georgia.
Some graduates have moved to the United States, while some are employed by Ministry of Public Works, MEC, USP, BOMI, MIPA, Tobolar, RRE, Payless, Ting Wong, MIMRA, PII, NTA, WAM, ELM Garage, MGAS, MIDB, Mal Govt, CMI, Islands Mechanical Repair & Service, EPA, K&K, MIR, Family Mart, Alele Museum, Ace Hardware, or at the outer islands. The employers all provided good feedback on Jita Kapeel graduates to Taiwan ICDF’s representatives.
Most of the employers on the island are satisfied with the work performance and work ethic of Jitok Kapeel graduates. Even though some graduates are not hired as electricians, plumbers and mechanics, the job skills and what they have learned from Jita Kapeel make them value-added employees. For example, Payless supermarket gave Mr. Enos Hebesus and Ace Hardware gave Mr. Heltino Lelwoj very good comment because they can give customers good advice when recommending the related products or help repair store equipments.
ROC Taiwan Ambassador George T.K. Li hosted the Jita Kapeel Reunion last Friday at ICC and said, “’We are very happy to see Jita Kapeel have profound effects and most of the graduates have good jobs to support the well beings of their families.” RMI Deputy Chief Secretary Justina Langidrik and NTC Director Allison Nashion also stressed the importance of capacity building of human resources in the Marshall Islands and expressed gratitude to Ambassador Li for ROC Taiwan’s continued support.
