Deputy Representative Mr. James Buu attended the opening ceremony of the 2026 Malaysia Women’s Baseball Championship today (August 14). The tournament also marks the opening of Malaysia’s first full-scale baseball field at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), representing an important milestone in the development of baseball in the country.
The tournament has specially invited Ms. Sophiyah Liu, an international baseball umpire from Taiwan, Founder of the Taiwan Sport Forward Association, and an Ambassador-at-Large of the Republic of China (Taiwan), to serve as the chief umpire.
In his opening remarks, Deputy Representative Buu shared Taiwan’s baseball development journey, from the 1968 Red Leaves League Team to the establishment of professional baseball. He also introduced Ms. Sophiyah Liu as the first female baseball umpire certified by the Chinese Taipei Baseball Association, highlighting her long-standing dedication to umpiring and the promotion of women’s sports. He expressed his appreciation for Ambassador Liu’s contributions and efforts in this field.
Ms. Tsai Hsin-tien, National President of the Taiwan Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Malaysia, also attended the opening ceremony.
The Taiwan Sport Forward Association, together with our office, specially prepared baseballs to present to teams from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Bangladesh as a gesture of encouragement and support for the players.
