MOFA Minister Joseph Wu has consistently expressed his concerns that the vague and arbitrary language of the national security law introduced in #HongKong posed a threat to #FreedomOfThePress and #RuleOfLaw in the special administrative region.
Unfortunately, over the last week, his concerns have been shown to be well-founded, with the arrest of #AppleDaily executives and financial pressure levied on the organization, forcing it to close its doors, leaving the media landscape of Hong Kong bereft of a voice that spoke with integrity.
It’s now that we should keep in mind Minister Wu’s warning, that Hong Kong is just the beginning and every country around the world should be wary of the pernicious influence of China’s expanding authoritarianism. Plucking the apple reveals the authoritarianism lying beneath. As Minister Wu has said "Appeasement is getting us nowhere."
