On May 19th, 2018, a Cooking Demonstration and Nutrition Workshop was held at Ngaraard State by the Taiwan Technical Mission(TTM) with the support of Bureau of Agriculture, Shin Kong and Show Chwan Hospital. The aim is to instruct people how to lead a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet through consuming more local vegetables and produce. TTM also distributed 300 taro seedlings and 250 pounds of local produced vegetables to the participants.
The Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Wallace Chow thanked Ngaraard State Governor Benjamin Iskawa for the assistance to the workshop and said that he experienced the friendliness and generosity of the Ngaraard State Government and the people.
During the workshop, four healthy dishes – “pork curry with vegetables”, “Thai basil ground pork with vegetables”, “Taiwanese style green salad” and “taro chicken soup” were demonstrated by nutritionist Ting Chou of the TTM. A large number of local grown green onion, squash, radish, pumpkin, eggplant, and taro were used as the ingredients. Ting demonstrated the dishes and explained the benefits of each vegetable used in the cooking.
Furthermore, a presentation of healthy diet was presented by doctor Tom Chou of Shin Kong Hospital. Participants were taught to read the food labels before purchasing and explained how the food groups, calories, food servings can affect their health. After the presentation, participants knew how to choose healthy food and control diets.
At the end of the workshop, Show Chwan Hospital provided the service of blood pressure and weight measurement to the participants. Through such exercise, participants were explained of the reading and the steps to improve their health.
This year, TTM plans to hold a vegetables and fruits cultivation workshop every month, offering courses regarding farm designing and management, preparing vegetable and fruit seedlings, plant cultivation and management, plant pest and disease control, and organic compost making.
