Taipei Mission in Sweden held a banquet to celebrate the 109th National Day of the Republic of China (Taiwan) at the Swedish History Museum on the evening of October 7, 2020. The former Prime Minister of Sweden, Hon. Carl Bildt, Chairperson of the Swedish-Taiwanese Parliamentarian, Hon. Boriana Åberg, Members of Swedish Parliament, Ambassador Romina E. Taboada Tonina, Embassy of Paraguay to the Kingdom of Sweden, senior government officials and business leaders attended the banquet.
In his remarks, Ambassador Yao, representative of Taipei Mission in Sweden addressed that Taiwan has demonstrated its resilience in realizing numerous internationally acclaimed democratic achievements. Taiwan has stood up to China’s intimidation and threats, adopted a democratic Model to contain the local spread of COVID-19 and facilitated Taiwan’s proactive assistance to other countries, which received worldwide recognition. Also, Ambassador Yao expressed appreciation to the government of Sweden’s support for Taiwan’s participation in WHO and to the Swedish parliamentarians for raising motions to support Taiwan.
Hon. Boriana Åberg, Chairperson of the Swedish-Taiwanese Parliamentarian Association, addressed that Sweden can learn from Taiwan’s experiences in combating COVID-19, and she called for support for Taiwan’s freedom and values of democracy. She would do everything in her power to defend the existence and sovereignty of Taiwan. Hon. Boriana Åberg concluded her speech by inviting all the guests to propose a toast to the prosperity of Taiwan.
In order to follow the restrictions and recommendations in Sweden, the number of the participants of the banquet met the requirement of 50-people limit, and the attendance is by invitation only. The participants are seated to keep social distance. Taipei Mission in Sweden offered facial masks at the venue, and provided sanitizers on each table.
