In partnership with Taiwan Docs project under Taiwan Film Institute, the 29th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) offers a glimpse into Taiwanese documentary cinema through a section called “Focus: Taiwanese Docu-memories”. Representative Francis Kuo-Hsin Liang graced the festival, which featured 11 Taiwanese documentaries, and joined Directors Wu Yao-tung and Ho Chao-ti, and Ms. Chen Teling, Deputy CEO of the Taiwan Film Institute, for the screening of films such as “Swimming on the Highway”, “Goodnight and Goodbye” and “Turning 18”.
Founded in 1987, the Singapore International Film Festival is the largest and longest-running film event in Singapore. It has become an iconic event in the local arts calendar that is widely attended by international film critics; and known for its dynamic programming and focus on ground-breaking Asian cinema for Singapore and the region. The 29th edition running from 28 November to 9 December 2018 screens over 100 feature and short films from 44 countries. The opening film and special presentation film, namely, “Cities of Last Things” and “Dear Ex”, are from Taiwan. Both films shone and attracted an audience of about a thousand.
With the support of Taiwan Film Institute, the Singapore International Film Festival presents to the local audience recent developments in Taiwanese documentary cinema. Comprising a tradition dating back to the pioneering works of the 1960s, the featured films are more than mere historical documents—they feature an astonishing energy and offer piercing insights into Taiwan as a burgeoning nation.
