Swazis Flock Taiwan Embassy for Scholarships
Hopeful students have been flocking the Republic of China (Taiwan) Embassy for scholarships as the deadline for application nears. The scholarship application process has been open since January and the deadline is Friday.
An employee at the Embassy Sibusiso Zwane said the interest from local applicationts had increased since the deadline was now close. “There is a lot of interest for studying in Taiwan this year, the numbers have increased from last year’s statistics. Roughly, the numbers are fast nearing 100 applicants while last year it was less than that,” he said.
Zwane said more than 20 students were awarded scholarships last year and a contributing factor might have been that not many people knew about the scholarships then. However, he said he was not sure how many would receive scholarships this year.
Zwane said many applicants are interested in studying business and trade programmes, international health as well as mechanical engineering. He said most people applied for the undergraduate programmes while a few applied for master’s degrees and none applied for PhD programmes.
The Embassy issued an advert in local publications early this year inviting Swazis who were interested in applying for undergraduate, masters and PhD programmes to apply for scholarships.
Zwane said said two forms of scholarships were offerd , one sponsored by the International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) and the other scholarships sponsored by the Republic of China on Taiwan. He urged more people to come and apply since the application process by ROC would open until March 31.
Application forms are obtainable from the Embassy and students need to present a complete form with a photo, copy of passport, academic records from high school or university, a copy of application form from the university to which one wishes to apply as well as a complete medical form.
