On 16th-17th June the TRO’s Deputy Representative, Shyang-Yun Cheng visited Wrexham in northern Wales to consolidate ties with the region. Invited by Ian Lucas, MP for Wrexham, the TRO delegation conducted meetings with a wide range of figures from local government and local businesses.
During the two day visit, TRO staff met with the Vice-Chancellor of Glyndwr University to discuss edu-cational collaboration between the UK and Taiwan, while also holding talks with major businesses located in the region, including Airbus at Broughton, as well as health-food and cable manufacturing compa-nies.
The delegation proceeded to brief representatives from the devolved Welsh government, local government and business leaders on what Taiwan has to offer, drawing upon its economic development, trade and investment opportunities and providing an overview of UK-Taiwan bilateral relations. Businesses were also invited to attend a trade exhibition in Taiwan.
The visit marked the continuity of the TRO’s Regional Outreach Programme established by former Representative Chih-kung Liu, who retired in early June. With both Glyndwr University and Airbus expressing particular interest in further co-operation, the visit constitutes a significant stride forward in Taiwan’s links with Wales. (E)
