On 8 May, the government of Taiwan expressed its deep regret over Taiwan’s non-invitation to the 71st WHA meeting scheduled to take place from 21-26 May. Since 2009, Taiwan participated in the WHA as an observer for eight consecutive years. However, Taiwan was excluded from last year's WHA and has not yet received an invitation to date due to pressure from the Chinese government.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) calls on the World Health Organisation (WHO) and related parties to adopt an inclusive approach and accept Taiwan’s participation in this year’s WHA and other WHO-organised activities, meetings and mechanisms. ‘In this way, ensure that human rights can be upheld, the integrity of the global disease network maintained, and a win-win result achieved for all,’ MOFA added. ‘Taiwan is still waiting for a WHA71 invitation. It’s time for Taiwan to play a bigger role in boosting global health by participating in WHA as an observer and other WHO activities and meetings,’ the Ministry tweeted on 14 May.
