On June 3, the UK House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee heard from former Vice President of Taiwan Chen Chien-jen via video-conference, where he shared Taiwan's successful test and trace strategy to combat COVID-19.
At the conference, which was chaired by former Foreign Secretary and committee head Jeremy Hunt, former Vice President Chen told the cross-party committee about how the ‘Taiwan Model’ of prudent action, rapid response and early deployment, backed by a very high level of public trust in government, helped Taiwan to control the ongoing pandemic.
The former Vice President then took questions from committee members, where he offered insight on Taiwan’s disease-prevention measures, including establishing effective testing, contact tracing and quarantine protocols, and education on the importance of maintaining personal hygiene and public health.
“In pandemic control, nobody can contain the disease alone. We need international collaboration, and data sharing and experience sharing are very important”, said the former Vice President, adding that “if Taiwan were to become an observer of the World Health Organisation, it would be a three‑win policy: good for Taiwan, good for the WHO and good for the international community.”
