The full program of the Liverpool Biennial will be open for the public on the 19th May – with Taiwanese artist Luo Jr-Shin participating in the exhibition. Curated by Manuela Moscoso, the theme of the 11th edition of the biennial, “The Stomach and the Port,” is inspired by Liverpool’s port city heritage. The biennial will see artists explore notions of the body from non-Western ways of thinking and challenge an understanding of the individual as a defined, self-sufficient entity. The artists are also encouraged to situate these enquiries with the context of Liverpool’s maritime history as a point of global contact and circulation.
Curator Manuela Moscoso visited Taiwan in August 2019, exploring the country’s contemporary art scene, and invited Luo Jr-Shin to participate in the upcoming biennial.
Supported by the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan and Taipei Representative Office in the UK, Luo Jr-Shin’s work “Like a filter, matters passed through you and became a part of you” (2021) will be featuring at the historic Lewis’s Building. Appearing like a nightclub toilet, the set of installations are treated as a metaphorical facilitator for material transformation.
Luo Jr-Shin was born in Miaoli, Taiwan in 1984. His creative process usually involves experiment with traditional and atypical materials – reorganizing and collaging clay, resin, metal and everyday objects. His previous works, which have been installations, sculptures and objects, investigate spirituality and the human condition, being found at major exhibitions and galleries in both Taiwan and internationally.
Liverpool Biennial is one of the world’s most important contemporary art exhibitions, focusing on artistic involvement in the community and inviting international artists to interact and connect Liverpool’s history and urban space. Taiwanese artists Chen Chieh-Jen, Tsui Kuang-Yu, Chou Yu-Cheng and architect Hsieh Ying-Chun have participated in previous editions.
