Ambassador Alexander Yui joined CNN’s The Lead with Jake Tapper last Friday to discuss the importance of U.S. arms sales to Taiwan in order to maintain a strong defense for Taiwan and uphold a stable, secure status quo across the #TaiwanStrait. Amb. Yui reminded that Taiwan is not the aggressor, but it must continue developing its defense strategies of deterrence as a means of “peace through strength.”
Amb. Yui also indicated that communication between Taiwan and the U.S. is fluent and constant, and that the U.S. has reiterated its policy on Taiwan remains unchanged. He encouraged healthy communications between all stakeholders, and said that Taiwan is willing to talk with the PRC, provided it’s on an equal footing and with mutual respect. The Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People’s Republic of China are not subordinate to each other, ROC Taiwan is a sovereign, independent and thriving democracy, where the people exert universal suffrage to elect its leaders, and the government rightfully conducts international affairs.
