2018 Filmfest DC will present Taiwan’s Golden Horse best picture “The Bold, the Corrupt and the Beautiful” on Saturdays, April 21 and April 28, 2018 at Landmark’s E Street Cinema.
“The Bold, the Corrupt and the Beautiful” is directed by Ya-Che Yang and has won 2017 Golden Horse best picture. This film tells an outrageously labyrinthine tale of power, corruption, and lies pivoting on a ruthless matriarch and the daughters for whom
she is ostensibly gaining all her wealth. Madame Tang (Golden Horse best actress Kara Wai) is a shameless profiteer, exploiting illegal land speculation laws, playing political games, and waging psychological warfare among her peers. An investigation into a car accident that killed one of Tang’s enemies and left his daughter in a coma soon morphs into a murder case that eventually brushes up against Tang’s illegal dealings. Maternity and morality are unrecognizably distorted and family cohesion starts to unravel. Buoyed by a triumvirate of stellar performances, the film proves to be a wonderfully lurid, soapy reckoning as gifts are never given from the heart and advice is never dealt out without an ulterior motive.
“The Bold, the Corrupt and the Beautiful” is in Mandarin with English subtitles.
This event is co-sponsored by the Taiwan Academy, Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States.
