West Chester University Presents Taiwanese Ceramics Art
“The Wind of Change” Oct. 5-Oct 30, 2020
West Chester University’s Department of Art + Design will launch a public, live exhibit to showcase Taiwanese ceramics arts. The exhibit, “The Wind of Change: Contemporary Ceramics of Taiwan” is on display from October 5 – 30 in the Knauer Gallery, Swope Music Building and Performing Arts Center (817 S. High Street, West Chester). Due to the Covid-19, the show is open to the public by appointment only on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Please email Laurie Moran at lmoran@wcupa.edu for an appointment.
This exhibition is curated by Professor Ching Yuan Chang of Tainan National University of the Arts, and made possible by the generous support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
Professor Chang says in the curation statement, “Taiwan has been using clay as a sculptural material for over forty years; therefore to pursue technical breakthroughs in ceramic practice is not an issue anymore. The difficulty that all practitioners need to confront today is how to create a new perspective with clay, especially when clay requires a vast cultivation of knowledge and techniques. Moreover, under the globalization trend, young artists and almost all non-Western countries will need to face the changes of their own culture and search for the balance between innovation and tradition. It is significant that one can stand firm on his or her cultural foundation and evolve globally.”
Andrew Snyder, Associate Professor of Art at West Chester University says in the press release, “This exhibit is a phenomenal display of the craftsmanship, creativity and resilience of clay in Taiwan. The quality of the work is exquisite, and all the participating artists on display are nationally recognized in Taiwan. We are thrilled to have this work in our gallery, as it showcases the variety and innovation of Taiwanese ceramics with functional and figurative works, abstract sculptures and wall installations.”
After the exhibition at Baltimore Clayworks, which has an artist exchange program with Tainan National University of the Arts, in August, the show moved to West Chester University as one of the stops of the exhibition.
This exhibition is co-presented with the Taiwan Academy, Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States.
