Taiwan’s National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) and Washington Performing Arts co-present an online concert, titled “A Brief and Modern History of the Étude,” by acclaimed Taiwanese pianist Jenny Lin, which premieres on Jan. 29, 2021 at 8 pm EST and will be available through Feb. 4, 2021. The program includes Études by Chopin, Liszt, Gershwin/Wild, Philip Glass, and William Bolcom. In the curtain speech pre-filmed at the Twin Oaks Estate, a historic and cultural place of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO) located in Washington D.C., Representative Bi-khim Hsiao said it was such a great pleasure to serve as an Honorary Patron for Jenny Lin’s performance, and thanked Ms. Jenny Bilfield, President & CEO of Washington Performing Arts and her team for the invitation and for their efforts in creating new ways to enjoy the performing arts and music during the pandemic through their new digital platform, Home Delivery Plus.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, TECRO had collaborated with Washington Performing Arts to host events to promote cultural exchanges and arts education at the Twin Oaks Estate, and the partnership will continue into the future. Though the concert had to be moved online due to the pandemic, it was pre-recorded at the Weiwuying Center, which since its opening in 2018, has been praised by acclaimed international media as one of the greatest concert halls in the world. Britain’s Daily Guardian in one headline read “the Biggest Arts Venue on the Earth Lands in Taiwan.”
Born in Taiwan, Jenny Lin is one of the most respected young pianists today, admired for her adventurous programming and charismatic stage presence. She has been acclaimed for her recital work which “was as thoughtfully conceived as it was beautifully executed” and for her “deeply felt performances,” by The Washington Post.
Representative Hsiao also said once we get through the pandemic together, TECRO welcomes the public to pay a visit to the historic and cultural Twin Oaks to view the works in person by Taiwanese artists, including Contemporary Art from Art Bank Taiwan, and to experience Taiwanese culture (E).
