Director General Vincent Liu gave a speech at the Alabama House of Representatives
Director General Vincent Liu of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta gave a remark at the Alabama House of Representatives on May 16. DG Liu addressed US-Taiwan relations, Taiwan and Alabama trade and economic relations, and the Taiwan Relations Act 40th Anniversary.
In his remarks, DG Liu stressed that the Taiwan Relations Act forms the bedrock of the strong US-Taiwan alliance. In a recent video teleconference on April 9 at the Center for Strategic & International Studies, President Tsai Ing-wen noted that the TRA reflects the United States’ commitment to Taiwan’s shared interests of peace, security, and stability in the Pacific.
He also noted that Taiwan’s global enterprises are investing in and procuring from the United States at a very high level, and major US technology giants, including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and IBM have expanded their presence in Taiwan. Taiwan and Alabama also share a relationship in common with Amazon, which recently chose Bessemer for its 855,000-square-foot Fulfillment Center. Amazon also launched its Web Services center in Taiwan.
DG Liu especially thanked the Alabama House of Representatives for passing the resolution this year to highlight and support mutual relations between Taiwan and the state ofAlabama. DG Liu also emphasized that the 72nd World Health Assembly will be hosted in Geneva on May 20 to 28. This year marks the 24th anniversary of Taiwan’s implementation of universal health coverage. Taiwan’s National Health Insurance covers the full spectrum of essential and high-quality health service. He urged WHO to allow Taiwan to participate in its technical meetings, mechanisms and activities.
DG Liu also thanked two Congressional Taiwan Caucus members from Alabama, the Honorable Terri Sewell and the Honorable Mo Brooks, who have supported the House Resolution 273, 2019 Taiwan Assurance Act, passed by the US House of Representatives on May 7th. This is a further assurance of the relationship in which our shared interests can be protected, our shared value defended.
DG Liu received standing ovation from Alabama House of Representatives after the speech.
