To celebrate the Taipei and Atlanta 40th anniversary of sister cityhood, the Taipei Symphony Orchestra (TSO) visited Atlanta to perform at the Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University. Director General Vincent Liu of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta, TECO officers, Atlanta Airport Public Affairs Protocol Officer Mar Anderson, John Lu, President of the Atlanta Care and Assistance Association, Dr. Ray Wang, Secretary General of the Association, and local Taiwanese community leaders welcomed TSO at Atlanta International Airport on November 16.
Right after arriving in Atlanta, six musicians of TSO performed at the atrium of this world’s busiest airport. They played famous Taiwanese popular songs “Taipei’s Sky”, “Green Island Serenade”, and Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons – Autumn”, and Dvorak’s “New World Symphony.” Atlanta Airport welcomed TSO with greetings on a bulletin board and electric banners.
DG Vincent Liu gave remarks at a reception before the musical performance on November 17 at the Rialto Center. In his remarks, DG Liu emphasized that 2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act and Taipei-Atlanta Sister Cityhood. After two years of planning, the around 100 plus members of TSO finally made the historical trip to Atlanta. DG Liu thanked the organizers and sponsors of the event and gave the audience an overview of TECO’s functions in the Southeastern United States.
Sunday’s program included Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, Taiwanese composer Gordon Shi-Wen Chin’s Double Concerto for Violin String, and Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No. 1 in C Minor, Pr. 68. International renowned conductor Jahja Ling conducted the performance, featuring cellist Flix Fan and violinist Paul Hung.
