As reported by Trevor Williams in Global Atlanta, TECO Acting DG Daniel Hung said that Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Organization is more urgent than ever in the wake of the 2019 outbreak and continuing spread of coronavirus. Acting DG Hung expressed this opinion during remarks at the Chinese Community Center’s Lunar New Year Banquet on Friday, January 31, 2020. He also mentioned that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have said they welcome Taiwan’s participation. He thanked Dr. Tom Price, then the Secretary of Health and Human Services, for his 2017 support of Taiwan at the World Health Assembly.
Hung noted that on January 11, 2020, Dr. Tsai Ing-wen won reelection in the 7th direct presidential election in Taiwan’s history. He said that on that day, the Taiwanese people once again demonstrated their dedication to sovereignty, freedom, democracy and human rights.
Distinguished guests at the banquet included Dr. Tom and Betty Price; Karen Handel; Dr. Bob Kennedy; Fulton County Chairman Rob Pitts; and Paulina Guzman, Global Engagement Officer in the Mayor’s Office of International Affairs. Other VIPs in attendance were Ayako Yasude and Kenjui Inoue of the Japanese Consulate General in Atlanta; Georgia House Representative Matt Dollar; Cobb County GOP Chair Jason Shepherd; Beatrice Torralba from Senator David Perdue’s office, and Andy Bush from Congressman Drew Ferguson’s office.
